Schengen calculator for Americans

US passport holders can enter the Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across 29 countries. From 2025 onward, Americans must also obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation before boarding. Days in the UK, Ireland and Cyprus do not count.

Key facts for US travellers

  • Allowance: 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the 29 Schengen states.
  • ETIAS travel authorisation required before boarding once the system launches.
  • The UK is a separate 6-month visa-free allowance and does not affect Schengen days.
  • Ireland and Cyprus are EU but not Schengen — days there don't count.
  • Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein do count.
  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure.

Typical American itinerary trap

Two weeks in Italy, two weeks in Greece, a week in Spain and a long summer in France add up quickly. A 30-day Paris study break followed by a 60-day autumn tour will hit 90 days exactly — one more day is an overstay, with real fines and re-entry bans.
