How long must my passport be valid to enter the Schengen Area?

Non-EU passport holders need a passport issued within the previous 10 years on the day of entry, and valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area.

Why are the extra months on my UK passport not accepted?

Before 10 September 2018 HM Passport Office added up to 9 months of unused validity onto a new passport. The EU measures the 10-year rule strictly from the issue date, so those extra months are ignored at the Schengen border.

Do EU, EEA and Swiss citizens need 3 months of passport validity?

No. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens exercising free movement only need a passport or national ID card that is valid on the day of travel.
