US Visitors Guide to ETIAS, Schengen and UK

If you are flying from the United States to Europe in 2026, the confusing part is not the flight — it is working out which rules apply to which country. Europe is not one border. The UK, Ireland and the Schengen area all run separate entry systems, and American passport holders now deal with three different acronyms: ETA, EES and ETIAS. This guide explains what you actually need, what each one costs, and the restrictions — including the 90/180 rule — that still catch travellers out.

The short answer for US citizens

• United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland): you need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel. It costs £20 and permits visits of up to 6 months.
• Schengen area (France, Spain, Italy, Germany and 26 more European countries): no visa needed for short trips, but you are limited to 90 days in any 180-day period, and you will be registered at the border by the new Entry/Exit System (EES).
• ETIAS: the EU's €20 pre-travel authorisation is not in operation yet. When it launches, you will need it in addition to — not instead of — the rules above.
• Ireland: not in Schengen and does not use the UK ETA. US citizens can visit visa-free; Irish entry rules apply separately.

Is the UK part of Europe — and do you need a different visa?

Geographically yes, but for border purposes the UK is completely separate. The UK left the EU and was never part of the Schengen area, so it runs its own entry system. Time spent in the UK does not count towards your Schengen 90/180 allowance, and a Schengen authorisation never covers the UK — or vice versa. If your trip includes both London and Paris, you are dealing with two separate border regimes on one holiday.

Visiting the UK: the ETA

Since 2025, US passport holders need a UK ETA before boarding. Key facts, per GOV.UK:

• It costs £20, applied for online or via the official UK ETA app.
• It allows stays of up to 6 months for tourism, family visits and certain business activities.
• It is digitally linked to your passport — renew your passport and you need a new ETA.
• Apply only at the official UK ETA page on gov.uk. Third-party sites charge extra for the same application, and some are outright scams.

Visiting the Schengen area: the 90/180 rule

The Schengen area covers most of the EU plus Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein. For US citizens the rule is simple to state and easy to miscalculate: you may spend a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined.

Two points people miss:

• It is a rolling window, not a calendar reset. On any given day, border officials look back 180 days and count every day you were inside Schengen.
• It is cumulative across countries. Two weeks in Spain, a month in Italy and a month in Greece all add to the same 90-day total.

EES: what happens at the Schengen border now

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is replacing passport stamps at Schengen borders. On your first trip you will register fingerprints and a facial image at a kiosk or e-gate; on later trips the system recognises you and automatically logs your entry and exit. There is nothing to apply for and no fee — but it does mean the 90/180 rule is now enforced automatically, day by day, so manual miscounting is no longer something that slips through.

ETIAS: coming, but not yet

ETIAS is the EU's pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, including Americans. As of August 2026 the official EU website states it is not in operation and no applications are being collected. When it launches:

• It will cost €20 per application (under-18s and over-70s are exempt from the fee but still need the authorisation).
• It will be valid for up to 3 years, or until your passport expires.
• It will not change the 90/180 rule — it is a pre-travel check, not extra days.
• Applications will only ever be taken on the official EU site (travel-europe.europa.eu) or the official EU app.

Passport validity rules that catch people out

• Schengen: your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Schengen.
• UK: your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay.

A combined UK + Europe itinerary, step by step

1. Check your passport against both validity rules.
2. Apply for the UK ETA (£20, gov.uk only) if the UK is on your route.
3. Count your Schengen days with the 90/180 calculator — remember UK days do not count.
4. Ignore any site selling ETIAS today; bookmark the official EU site for when it launches.
5. At Schengen borders, allow extra time for first-time EES registration.
