The multi-leg business trip survival guide

Why one-off travel advice fails business travellers
Almost everything written about "travel hydration" is written for the once-a-year long-haul passenger. That advice assumes a recovery window on both sides of the trip.
Business travellers do not get a recovery window. Monday morning is a flight, Monday night is a client dinner, Tuesday is meetings, Tuesday night is another flight, and the deficit compounds until Friday evening when it hits like a truck.
This is the playbook that consultants, sales leaders and road warriors use to make it through the week.
The standing kit (never unpacks)
- Resealable bag in the top of the carry-on
- 5-7 electrolyte sticks (one per flight plus spares)
- Collapsible 1 L water bottle
- Lip balm
- Eye mask
- Spare phone charger
- Ibuprofen and paracetamol
Nothing decision-worthy. Nothing to remember. The bag never comes out of the carry-on except to top up sticks.
The Monday-morning flight
Airport lounge coffee, boarding, and the flight before your Monday afternoon meeting.
- If it is a short sector (under 3 hours): one stick, no coffee.
- If it is a long-haul sector: one TRAVELYTES™ MAX (80mg caffeine) instead of the lounge coffee. Covers hydration and morning caffeine in one stick.
Do not eat the airline breakfast if you can avoid it. Salt-heavy scrambled eggs and pastry is exactly the wrong start.
The client dinner
The single biggest destroyer of Tuesday morning is the second glass of wine on Monday night.
Rules that actually get followed:
- One glass of water for every alcoholic drink
- Order sparkling water for the table — makes hydration a group activity rather than a personal quirk
- If the dinner runs late, a stick in the hotel room before bed. Not after. Before.
The connection day
Two flights in one day. Tight connection. This is where most business travellers cut hydration corners because there is no time.
- Board every sector with a filled bottle from airside
- One stick per sector
- If the connection is under 90 minutes, skip the transit coffee — one more caffeine hit on top of two flights is a wasted lever
The hotel arrival routine
The 15 minutes between check-in and the hotel bar or restaurant is the most important 15 minutes of the trip.
- One stick with 500 ml of water, in the room, before anything else
- Then shower
- Then bar
The passengers who do this routinely are the ones who look functional in Wednesday morning meetings. The ones who go straight to the bar are the ones who look grey.
Time zones
Multi-leg trips often cross zones. Hydration will not fix jet lag — jet lag is a circadian mismatch that only light exposure, sleep timing and meal timing shift. But dehydration on top of jet lag is what turns a manageable adjustment into a wrecked week. Handle the hydration; the circadian side is a separate playbook — start with [Flight Tiredness Hydration](/flight-tiredness-hydration).
Which TRAVELYTES™ product
MAX for morning flights and any sector before a same-day meeting (80mg caffeine + hydration in one stick). FLIGHT for evening flights, hotel arrival and bedtime resets.
Business travellers typically carry both — MAX in the morning slot, FLIGHT in the evening slot.
The one habit
If you take nothing else from this guide, take this: a stick in the hotel room on arrival, before the bar. It is a 60-second habit that changes the arc of the entire trip.
