Hydration and Circulation on Long Flights: What the Evidence Says

Why Cabin Air and Immobility Matter for Circulation

Long flights combine two well-documented factors: prolonged immobility and exceptionally dry cabin air. Health bodies including the NHS, the CDC and the WHO publish general comfort guidance for passengers on long-haul travel that focuses on fluid intake, movement and (where appropriate) graduated compression hosiery.

This article is a general educational overview. It is not medical advice and TRAVELYTES™ products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, including Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). If you have any personal risk factors, please speak to a qualified healthcare professional before travelling.

How Cabin Air Affects Fluid Balance

Aircraft cabins are typically kept at 10–20% relative humidity — drier than many desert environments. Passengers can lose fluid through normal breathing and skin evaporation throughout the flight, a phenomenon the Aerospace Medical Association describes in its passenger health guidance.

Caffeine and alcohol can both contribute to additional fluid loss. By the time a passenger feels thirsty, fluid balance may already be measurably reduced.

General Comfort Guidance for Long Flights

Public health bodies consistently highlight three general comfort measures for long-haul passengers:

1. Maintain Fluid Intake

Drinking water regularly through the flight supports normal fluid balance. An electrolyte sachet such as TRAVELYTES™ FLIGHT provides minerals (including magnesium, which contributes to normal muscle function and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue under EFSA-authorised wording) alongside water.

2. Move Regularly

Standing, walking the aisle when safe to do so, and performing simple seated ankle and calf movements are widely recommended general comfort measures.

3. Consider Graduated Compression Hosiery

For longer flights, properly fitted graduated compression stockings are recognised by health authorities as a general comfort option. A pharmacist or doctor can advise on suitability.

Where TRAVELYTES™ FLIGHT Fits

TRAVELYTES™ FLIGHT is a food supplement formulated for general hydration and electrolyte support during travel. It supports normal fluid intake and supplies magnesium and potassium, which contribute to normal muscle function and electrolyte balance under EFSA-authorised health claims.

It is not a medical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent DVT or any other medical condition. It is intended to sit alongside the general passenger comfort measures recommended by health bodies, not to replace personalised medical advice.
