How to calculate Schengen days without getting banned

The Schengen 90/180 rule is one of the most misunderstood travel regulations in the world — and one of the most punishing when you get it wrong. Overstay by even a single day and you can face fines, deportation, and a Schengen-wide re-entry ban of up to five years.

This guide explains the rule in plain English, walks through the exact calculation, and points you to a free rolling-window calculator that removes the guesswork.

The rule in one sentence

Non-EU passport holders (UK, US, Canadian, Australian, and dozens more) may spend up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the 29 Schengen countries — without a visa.

The 4-step calculation

1. Pick a check date. Usually today, or the date of a planned entry. 2. Look back 180 calendar days from that check date. That is your rolling window. 3. Sum every day of presence inside that window. Entry and exit days both count as full days. 4. Subtract from 90. The result is your days remaining. If the sum exceeds 90, you have overstayed.

Example: on 1 October you look back to 4 April. If you spent 30 days in Spain in May and 40 days in Italy in July–August, that is 70 days used, 20 days remaining.

Which countries count?

Count toward the 90 days (29 Schengen members): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

Do not count: Ireland, Cyprus, United Kingdom, and every country outside Schengen (Turkey, Morocco, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, etc).

The five mistakes that get people banned

1. Assuming the window resets on leaving Schengen. It does not. It is rolling, not fixed. 2. Forgetting entry and exit days both count. A "7-night" trip landing Monday and leaving the following Monday is 8 Schengen days. 3. Counting Ireland or Cyprus as Schengen. They are EU but outside the Schengen Area. 4. Missing Switzerland and Norway. They are non-EU but full Schengen members — days there absolutely count. 5. Combining multi-country trips without adding them up. 30 in Spain + 40 in Germany + 25 in France = 95 days. Overstay.

Country-specific notes

  • UK passport holders (post-Brexit): the rule applies since 1 January 2021. Read the full guide at [/schengen-90-180-rule-uk-passport](/schengen-90-180-rule-uk-passport).
  • US passport holders: the same 90/180 rule plus the incoming ETIAS travel authorisation. Read the [Schengen calculator for Americans](/schengen-calculator-for-americans).
  • Croatia: joined Schengen on 1 January 2023. See [how to count Schengen days in Croatia](/schengen-days-croatia).

Do the maths automatically

The TRAVELYTES™ Schengen 90/180 Calculator is a free, private tool that logs every trip, tracks the rolling window, warns you before you breach 90 days, and shows the earliest date you can safely re-enter.

  • Traffic-light status: SAFE, CAUTION or DO NOT ENTER at a glance.
  • Next entry date: the exact day you can re-enter, plus how many days of stay that entry unlocks.
  • Overlap protection: prevents double-counting when trip dates conflict.

Final word

Border officers do not care about your spreadsheet or your itinerary. The stamps in your passport (and, from 2025, the EU Entry/Exit System) are the legal record. Do the maths before you fly, not at the border.
